The objective of this project was to design a bench that was based on the elements from nineteen-century architecture. I have chosen the Crystal Palace as my design inspiration.
Cast iron and glass were introduced for the construction of the crystal palace. A serial of arcades were designed to support the long and massive building. My solution for the bench design was to use eight bended solid metal beams for the supporting legs and back. These metal beams would be welded evenly around a several metal rings for strength. Meanwhile, these metal beams would be the representation of the arcades, as well as the construction material. Finally, a 2″ thick large piece of clear acrylic was chosen for the seating material; it symbolized the glass and overall beauty of the Crystal Palace.
